Philipsburg, Montana is a town of just over 900 people located approximately 75 miles South East of Missoula on Highway 1. Highway 1 is off the beaten path, and the town itself actually sits off the highway several hundred yards and is nestled among some low hills that obscure the view of the town from the highway. If I had not stopped at the gas station on the highway, I might never have noticed that a wonderful little town is hidden here.
This old mining town is full of well maintained historical buildings. Philipsburg has been sleepy for quite some time but newly renovated buildings and new businesses are starting to change that. There are currently sapphire shops and impressive (huge!) candy stores on the main strip. There is a local ski area, Discovery Ski Area, that is a short drive away on Highway 1 and can be seen from town.
I stayed at the Broadway Hotel while I was there and I highly recommend it. I’ll do a full write up on this hotel next time I stay there.
