Sumpter, Oregon is an old gold mining town in Northeast Oregon. Most of the town burned down in 1917 and was never rebuilt so there’s not too much to see there anymore although it’s still an interesting place to visit. A massive floating gold dredge has been restored and is now on display at the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area. Sumpter is 3 miles off of highway 7. This area is pretty far off the beaten path but if you ever find yourself in the area, take the 3 mile spur off the highway and check the dredge out. It’s well worth the trip. There is also a steam locomotive that runs during the summer and offers rides through the valley.
