Rock Climbing Boulder City, Jackson Hole

September 2006

Just a quick note on the ‘boulder city’ climbing area outside Jackson, Wyoming. This is a nice area to visit if you are looking for a quick workout or some short top rope routes near Jackson. It is essentially exactly what it sounds like, a traffic jam of large boulders ranging from 3 feet to 30 feet in height. Many of the taller boulders have bolts on the lips for top rope opportunities. Route difficulties range from “did while sleeping” to “not in my wildest dreams”. Definitely take a pad if you are not planning on top rope.

Getting to it is a little tricky. Start by driving north out of Jackson on Highway 89 and taking a left at the North Jenny Lake entrance. Pull into the first right side turnout you come to and park (it’s a big turnout and will hold up to 40 cars). Take the unmarked trail that starts next to the interpretive sign and follow it across the opening into the trees. After about ¼ mile there will be a trail that veers off to the right (again unmarked) and climbs up over the small moraine on the right. This will bring you right into boulder city. Enjoy.
