In the heart of Central Oregon Mount Bachelor stands solitary just south of the Three Sisters Mountains. Bachelor is no more than a volcanic cinder cone…..but a very large cinder cone. It stands 9,065 feet and receives over 350 inches of snow fall each year. It is the cinder cone shape of Mt. Bachelor that gives this mountain its amazing consistency from top to bottom. The Central Oregon Cascades are where the wet Pacific storms meet with cold, dry high dessert air creating some of the best powder dumps in the western United States.
These are the qualities that originally attracted a small group of local mountaineers. It was this group that conceived of a local ski area on this perfect mountain and ultimately brought it to life in 1958. They never looked back and since that time Mt. Bachelor has done nothing but grow. It now draws skiers from all over the globe and hosts numerous International ski and snowboard events.
From a local skier’s point-of-view this is a great mountain to have in your back yard. Weekend skiing can be a bit crowded, but manageable. Mid week skiing will often times feel like playing in the arctic with no one in sight for an entire run. Nearby Bend and Sunriver offer great lodging opportunities and a wide variety of nightlife. The area offers one of the best family oriented skiing experiences in the Northwest.
