Eureka, California is an old Victorian seaport town on the Northern California coast. Eureka was the economic hub of a remote region rich in timber and mineral resources. This resulted in the development of a vibrant Victorian business district and the building of numerous, elaborate Victorian homes and mansions by the business tycoons of the day. The spectacular Carson Mansion is one of the most photographed homes in America.
A sign in town reads:
Eureka was founded as a town in 1850 and incorporated as a city in 1874. Located on the remote northwestern coast of California, Eureka was the region's major port of entry by water in the 19th century before the construction of good access by land, and rose to historical prominence as the major social, political and economic center of the region. "Eureka" is a Greek expression and a popular mining term meaning "I have found it."
Eureka is close to a lot of great places to visit. Natural wonders include the Redwoods, the Lost Coast, and the remote Trinity Alps mountain range. If you didn't get enough Victorian architecture in Eureka, the nearby town of Ferndale is worth a visit and is one of the prettiest small towns anywhere.
