Bend Oregon

Bend City Culture
Bend City Culture

February 2007

Its funny how much we can take the place that we live in for granted. I have written about dozens of places all over the west and somehow completely forgot about my hometown of Bend, Oregon. Well here it is….and about time.

Bend was originally referred to as “Farewell Bend” by early pioneers who visited the small town alongside the Deschutes River. It is located on the fringe of the pine forests spilling out of the Cascade Mountains just before they give way to the high desert juniper trees and sagebrush. Bend was originally a logging and mill town, but this (as is true of so many other logging communities) has been replaced by outdoor recreation as the primary economy.

Being so close to the mountains, rivers, and high desert has made this spot a goldmine of outdoor sports and leisure. As a result there has been significant growth and development occur in the last 10 years. The population has grown to over 70,000. Activities can include fishing the Deschutes river, mountain biking the Paulina rim, skiing Mt. Bachelor, wakeboarding Prineville Reservoir, Golfing one of the world class courses, mountaineering the Cascade Peaks, and much more. The city life is also something to brag about. Bend is known for having more restaurants per capita then just about anywhere else. The nightlife has something for everyone as well from classical orchestra to cutting edge alternative music.

I could go on for a while, but suffice it to say that I think Bend is a great place to live and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.
