Rusty, many times I get to thinking the same as you but when I take a step back to look at the big picture I put the blame (poor word choice) on our larger population. The percentage of dummies (a polite word choice) is probably the same as before (and to be optimistic, maybe even a little less) but the overall number has increased with skyrocketing population.

My initial thoughts on the sentence was the same as yours, but I was not the judge with a real person standing in front of me, nor have I read the investigation reports on her. I'm going to trust the judge used his wisdom but I'm going to hope her community service involves really getting her hands and clothes dirty.

I know a place in Yosemite she can go clean up.

Good thoughts Ski.

I'll go sit on the "Group W" bench, with you and just shake my head.

It never ends does it? No matter how many we catch or all the  education and  protective measures we do, it keeps on happening----and it seems like there are more of them than before!  It seems like there is a certain % of our population that believe that it is their right to do as they please and be danged all those rules and regulations!  And the number seems to be growing! I've spent most of my professional career dealing with this stuff-even served as a prosecution  trial expert in a fed trial,  and helped put one of them in jail-and while nothing seems to stop it we have to try. As more people discover our outback, there are more opportunities to do the wrong thing! Well what can we do, just keep trying I guess?

I understand what you're saying Smoke but all of us are going to keep trying because we do care. That is a really good thing.

When I was at Hovenweep I talked to a vacationing LE Ranger who had been investigating and had finally caught a guy who had been 'tagging' National Parks for 30 years. I asked him if the guy had said why he did it and he said he said he just felt like it.   :(

per Mt 'Tallac:    there are a lot of "RIP's"...maybe scattering remains ....incredible views -- almost 4000' climb and just under 5 miles up...many use some sort of vinyl/plastic tagging....nearly impossible to remove....a few have used chalk which i least weathers quickly and is gone....

I certainly would not. Memorials, even a couple of big ones I know of that must have been hauled in by stock and cost a great deal, are popping up everywhere and in remote locations. And, it is illegal, maybe understandable, but certainly short sighted. As you say, little honor.

We were shooting waterfalls east of Cottage Grove, Oregon. There was a promising one near where we were camped so to catch it before the sun reached it, we arrived early only to find this ghastly plastic flowered memorial where no angle would eliminate it. I did report it to the USFS because it was on public lands. If you want to put one on your own property fine, but leave public places alone. There are just too many of these.
