I'll use 4wd  a lot just to exercise everything and to keep it lubed. Also just to make sure everything works as planned so I'm not surprised when I really need it..

Not really an extreme off roared to the point where my truck is already flipped side ways. I only use 4wd if the track is slippery since I do not have a hard time driving when using 2wd. There is also a gut feeling that your truck can't handle the road anymore and that si when I go 4wd. Let's say for a 3 hours drive, I just spend 30 mins with 4.

I put it in 4wd as soon as I leave the pavement. More control. I feel safer.

I try to use 4WD once every couple of months. Just to keep the lubrication distributed. I firmly believe that when in the real backcountry, I should stay in 2WD as long as reasonable, and only use 4WD when it is needed. That is a better way for me to assess terrain and road conditions.
