Hallmark campers usually come with 2, 6 volt batteries wired in series to produce 12 volts.

If the metal plates were exposed your batteries are probably shot. Yes they might charge up but will not stand up to a load.

My suggestion is to get two 6 volt golf car batteries with at least 200amp/hr rating. You can find them at places like Batteries Plus, Sam's Club and other places.

BTW you can , and should use a 12 volt charger/maintainer to keep your batteries in top shape. I use this one..

If you'd like I can take a picture of my set up tomorrow.. just let me know

Bellbear hello and good evening.
I would suggest you need assistance. Is there a company like interstate batteries you might could swing by and ask them to tell you what you have. Sounds like 2 big 6volt batteries and the small wire is to make the 6v batteries 12v. How ever this is one of those times when you can't just try this way and that way. At least with out damage.

Bellbear here are a couple of pics. I hope they help.
The first is a schematic drawing that was done by Hallmark. The second is of the battery compartment. In this picture you can see a couple of things. First is the black tubs that is part of a "watering system that allows me to top up the batteries without having to take them out of the compartment.

The second pair of wires that hang down are the wires that attach to my NOCO battery charger. I have them hardwired to the batteries.
