Has anybody mounted a CO on a flatbed? There us so much wasted space in the box with these campers, I thought a flatbed would really maximize the usable space.

If I remember correctly, somebody mentioned that the bed on a flat bed is higher than a stock bed. I already have to lift the camper to clear the cab so a little bit higher isn't a big deal, but I certainly wouldn't want the camper way up in the air either. I've seen a few mounted on utility boxes which look real nice but I would imagine sourcing a flatbed and outfitting it with boxes would be easier much less expensive than finding a utility box that would fit. I have the 10' CO that really needs support on those last two feet. With a 10' flatbed (or possibly a standard 9' plus a removable 1' support), I would probably modify the tub on the last two feet to bump out the full width of the camper. My rear wall is in bad need of being replaced so thought that would be a good way to make better use of the space while I'm in there anyways. I kicked around the idea of building a whole new tub to fit the footprint of the flatbed, similar to the way they are building some of the new ones but it seems like a lot of effort for a small amount of additional interior space.

Any wisdom that could be shared would be appreciated!

I see them frequently, usually a 8’, but also 10’ COs. Here’s one on a Highway Products aluminum FB. The owner lives in this one full time, and it’s been in some tight places.

I’d talk to the factory about their recommendations between FB or UB. One of our members got a very nice utility box with here new Alaskan.

Hello Draker:   Take a look at the flat bed build Carlyle did on both Wander the West and Expedition Portal.

Here's a link:  http://www.wanderthe...bed/?hl=carlyle

https://www.expediti...-build-up.9502/

Also an Alaskan build from Truck Camper Magazine:  https://www.truckcam...-dream-machine/

He has documented it meticulously and you will find much information to feast upon.

All the best...I have a 10ft Alaskan Cabover and enjoy it very much.

You can find used utility bodies - as well as flatbeds - for sale at the Truck Paper site:

Of course, you can also find them on Ebay . . .

Thanks for the replies! I have seen Carl's build before, but I suppose I dismissed it because it is much more elaborate than anything I have planned. Really, a flatbed or a service body would each provide a great solution. Ill just keep my eyes peeled and see what I can find over the next few months.

My wife and I completed the Pan Am about a year ago and the Alaskan was a great platform for doing the trip. Not too big, but plenty of indoor living space. We are now seriously talking about continuing our travels throughout the rest of the world. I'm sure Ill be posting here every once in a while as we get the Alaskan ready for another camping trip! Cheers!

I wouldn't exactly call driving the Pan Am "another camping trip"!
