Hi all

Am hoping to have Hallmark build us a new pop up truck camper.

Hadn’t planned on bringing a generator with us, however we already own a Honda 2000, and if we had it with us for occasional use, it would mean we could get installed on the pop up truck camper -  a little less solar, and a little less battery. We like to boondock.

Hallmark offers a re-design of the back end - with higher jacks, and 2 storage compartments…. that a Honda 2000 should fit into one of them, and also a slightly better angle of departure.

Does anyone here have this option? Thoughts?

also… does anyone happen to know if those rear brake lights are legal (conforming) to Canadian safety standards? I’d hate to have an issue if we are driving in Canada.  :-/

thanks

J.

I don’t have this set up as I have a long bed but I think Vic on here may.
With that said, I have not heard of anyone having any problems with their rear storage bins. That would include the legality of the lights. I’m sure they are DOT approved and you see many like them on other more conventional truck campers.
Assuming that you have the truck registered in the US you will not have any issues driving in Canada as rules and regulations regarding a vehicle are determined by where the truck is registered. As an example many vehicles that are sold in the US may not meet the stricter emission control requirements that are in California and may not be registered there.

I have this setup on my camper and I have had no problem with departure angles. Works great and it hold lots of storage. I’m in Arizona so if I want to do a quick trip in the summer I need the generator for the air! Love my Hallmark. IMG_0217.jpg

Hi all, just joined ...

I have those rear boxes on a '15 Hallmark K2 along with the the rear platform & higher mounted jacks you describe all carried by a Gen1 Tundra double-cab 6.5' bed.

I find them highly useful to carry the handy-dandy EU2000i in the right box and 5 lb. gas bottle, gas grill and grey water catch plastics/hoses in the left (so chosen to balance out weight) in the left one.  When traveling in cold weather with less outdoor cooking, the left box hosts a second 20 lb. bottle so I can run heat 5-7 days in 10-20 deg. F temps. before having to top back up.

To keep the cargo from flopping around on rougher roads, I cut up some of those rubberized foot mats found at the local hardware joint to fit the bottom to cushion the cargo (with pattern side down keep stuff out of any water that oozes in).  The boxes are not water-tight but will drain what little water gets in with any nose-up attitude of the vehicle.  The generator and other items in the boxes get packing stuffed around them (cut up pieces of camping foam sleeping pad) to keep everything firm and prevent jostling.  Loose stuff will beat up the boxes and everything else inside.

I'm have 200W of solar up top and only need to use the generator for AC/microwave in warm months, but during the days of long shadows, grey skies and running all systems I'll need to pull out the trusty Honda and bump the batteries by running on eco-throttle for 20-30 min. each day.  Sure is nice to have at the ready to pull out, fire up, juice the batteries, shut off, let cool and slide back in to keep 'er all operational. Having backup gas to prevent furnus interruptus when chilly is priceless in and of itself!

Being all the way at the back, I'd limit the loading to no more than 50 lbs or thereabouts though...

Hi all - I do have those boxes and love them.  Pretty much echo whats been said above, they hold a ton, very solid, not water tight but drain well.  I agree I wouldn't overload them being at the back of the rig.  Recently we used them to hold 3 pairs of snow shoes on winter trip, for instance.  Like everything Hallmark does they are high quality and built to last.

I'm sure the lights are DOT compliant, but I'll double check.
