I bought a 1986 Grandby that look like it lived through many Colorado hail storms and the roof is destroyed.  I am going to be replacing the canvas and will be redoing the roof at the same time.

I live in Colorado Springs and don't plan to drive to California anytime soon.

I would like to add solar panels and a roof rack so I will need to be able to make penetrations.

Has anyone found a source of aluminum with minimal seams to replace my mess?

Thanks

Wazzajohno,

Your in luck, the Metal Company in Arvada can probably make what you need. I think they can join two sheets of aluminum with one center seem, like the older FWCs came, including peaks and valleys (Mesa) patterns if you like. Give them a call, check it out, and let us know what you find out.

I bought my siding from them, and it seemed they could do an 80” plus sheet at whatever length you need. Mine was damaged from hail, but no perforations, or damage to the center seam, so I cleaned it, primed it, and finally painted it white with Rustoleum enamel. It’s not cheap, but they do great work.

Here’s my build if you care to check it out

I will give them a call.  Thanks Poky

Have you seen any builds with Filon?  I wonder how that would hold up on the room.  The aluminum seems to hold up so long as it doesn't get smashed.

Hey Warren,

I haven't seen anyone replace the aluminum siding with filon. I looked into it a bit, but my understanding is you need to attach it to luan, and the combination is a bit heavier than aluminum siding, and may be a little tricky attaching to the aluminum frame. I'm also not sure how it holds up to the sun over time. I like the aluminum siding as home DIYer. It is easy to install and easy to work with. Goes on pretty fast with not much fuss, holds it's color and finish nicely, and is affordable, though not cheap.

The metal company seems to have what I need and it seems like a straight forward way to put it together.

Thanks Poky!
