Thanks Bill. Silverton I have been to but not Telluride.

Frank, thanks for your comment. Those two towns, nearby as the crow flies, are quite different. Silverton gives more of a working class vibe; Telluride is surrounded by estates of the wealthy. S. is in a wide basin with beautiful mountain views; T. is in a narrow canyon with spectacular vistas. The mountains around T. are majestic - which may simply be perspective, as many of them are the same mountains, just from the other side ;-)

Love that area!
We had hoped to camp at Clear Lake when we were there near the end of June but the road was closed due to all the snow.
Hope to make it back there someday.
Thank you for the post.

Yes, you are allowed to camp up near the lake. It's above the timber line, so prepare for it to be chilly and windy. If you do camp up there, please, carry out your grey water and waste as it's such a pristine place (not that I really need to remind folks who are regulars on this forum.) There are a couple dispersed sites in the trees along the road up.

Ahhh another awesome trip report to live vicariously through :) Thanks Bill!

Thanks for your comment.

Bill thanks for the train leaving Silverton video.

That railroad and the Chama one are our favorites.

Bill, awesome trip. Thanks for sharing and for the ride along. Love that area of Colorado. We were supposed to stop in Telluride and the Silverton area on the way back to Indiana from Utah. Our solor controller died and a storm was forecast for several days. I had planned on fishing Trout Lake and the river near Ridgeway, but cut things short to head to Rocky Mountain FWC to get things checked out and replaced. Great report. jd

Friends,

If you're not out creating your own fun this holiday weekend, I hope you will take a virtual vacation with me.

Two weeks ago I toured parts of the San Juan Mountains of Colorado going up through Silverton and back down via Telluride.
Remember, click on any photo for a larger version. I recommend you click on the full-screen icon (upper right) on the spherical panoramas for full immersive effect.

Thanks for coming along.

Bummer you didn't get your planned fishing in. I did see a couple people fishing Trout Lake, but didn't see them catch anything (if that's any consolation.) Did Chris get you fixed up at Rocky Mountain?

Thanks, Frank. I've not ridden either, but love to see them. Maybe one day I'll buy a ticket.
