First, I'm not thinking about what one uses for Mnt Bikes...

When I'm crawling into the back of my truck, the plastic on the tailgate kills my knees.

Couple years ago, I crossed paths with someone who had a high density foam, that looked really nice on his tailgate.

Anyone done this and know what they used?

I keep a small, dense, closed cell foam pad handy (in the truck) just for this purpose. It is not installed, I just grab it when I need it

I keep a roll of Ensolite in the truck for crawling into the bed, and for laying on the ground while getting under the truck.

What’s a tailgate? :)

In the distant past, I seem to remember something about a backup camera or some other useful function, in addition to abusing old knees. (He said wistfully). ;)

If your looking for a permanent installation this is what we install in rescue boats on the aluminum floorboards. It is highly resistant to oils and gasoline, etc. although it will stain. Just clean the surface, peel and stick,  Quite durable.    https://www.hydroturf.com/
