UPDATE: Instead of reading what others do, I took note of an earlier post and made some calls.

Regarding Law:

I contacted the State Patrol Headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Trooper SGT Tim told me there is No Statute in Wisconsin that mentions or prevents privately owned vehicle exceeding the GVWR. He said this is something that is called out and enforced with commercial vehicles, but not non-commercial.

I specifically asked if an accident investigation would look at gross negligence or liability of the driver if overloading was suspected. That is not likely.

I did not ask if obeying the State Statute of your home state should cover you while traveling to other states.

I had asked another Trooper about licensing requirements of towables prior to my last trip west. Wisconsin doesn't require license plates for lower capacity utility trailers. If you meet your home state requirement you are covered, in that situation.

Regarding Insurance:

I contacted the A F I Claims Division and was directed to speak with my agent as they did not have a response.

Speaking with my agent I explained that this slide in camper would exceed the GVWR limit. I would be modifying my truck to better handle this weight (springs, assist, brake check, etc). I explained that just because others do this, I did not want to, if it would void my insurance coverage. The agent assured me I would be covered.

My agent responded that my Tow Vehicle/Truck carries the liability of whatever I tow or haul, including my slide in camper or travel trailer, and has NO Stipulation to GVWR including Towing or Carrying a load in excess of my GVWR.

My trailer and slide in camper have separate insurance policies to cover collision and comprehensive damage of those items. They do not carry separate liability coverage.

Probably ought to get this in writing but feeling a more confident. Thoughts?
