I got it. I picked up my new Grandby in Oct and headed out of Woodland for a shake down run. Spent 2 weeks in the Mc Arthur Burney, Lassen and Feather river areas. I saw some beautiful country without having to set up a tent or sleep on the ground once. Oh what luxury!
The bad news is that soon after I returned I discovered I had screwed up a couple of discs in my back. The Dr seems to think that lifting the camper top had something to do with it - Ya think. I've been grounded since then with a new camper in the driveway and it's driving me crazy. I'll probably miss my Baja trip this year.
My question is has anyone out there devised a way to simplify raising the camper top. I'm thinking of maybe a hinged pole like half a scissor jack between the roof and floor to get some mechanical advantage. Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to screw things up again after they glue me back together

I would imagine that a straight up motion bending only at the knees would avoid any trouble. I have had a lot of back problems, but lifting the camper top has never bothered me. Except for that time I almost broke my neck trying to push the top up with a Yakima Rocket Box on top......

marty here
I too have heard of this lifting system of thiers, it might be a mechanical jack with some kind of extension on it. I heard they work well.
Hope you get better.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll contact FWC and see what they have to offer when I'm ready to hit the road again - hopefully by spring.
