What's Near Long Valley Caldera?
The Long Valley Caldera is the massive, depressed area with Mammoth Lakes to the West, Crowley Lake to the Southeast and the Glass Mouantins to the north. From HWY 395, just north of the Mammoth Lakes area, turn east onto Owens River Road for about 4 miles.
When you think of all the hot springs, cinder cones, volcanoes (Mammoth Mountain), and continuing earthquakes in this area, there is able evidence this area is still very geologically active. Over the years various campgrounds have been closed because of CO2 emissions from the ground, The Long Valley Caldera is what is left of one the biggest eruptions in North America. Like we hear about many other volcanic areas, it will happen again.
