Getting There

To access the Mount Massive Trailhead from Leadville, travel 3 miles west on US Hwy. 24. Take Colorado 300 west 3/4 of a mile to Lake County 11. Follow signs to Elbert Creek Campground. The trailhead is just east of this campground. Hike north for 3 miles to the trail junction at 11,250 feet.

The Mount Massive Trail has had considerable improvement in the last several years as has many of the very busy routes to the summits of our Colorado fourteeners. This is good. After turning off of the Colorado Trail onto the Mount Massive Trail, you will break out of the trees as you reach timberline. The views are incredible of the broad open alpine slopes, the Upper Arkansas River Valley, and the surrounding high peaks.
