The Alpine Lakes Loop Trail is an easy walk through a high elevation forest on the east side of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park. This is a place to feel a long ways away from the commonly held misconception that Nevada is all desert.
Walk a loop from the high elevation car camp through a pine forest, past two glacial tarns and back to camp. Or take a detour to the bristlecones and glacier before heading back to camp.
We spent the 4th of July weekend at GBNP. It was a wonderful experience. After four nights of acclimating to the altitude we decided to do the hike to the Bristlecones on the 5th. I ended up going all the way to the rock glacier and finally continued to what remains of the alpine glacier. That was the day I learned why people climb mountains. We can't wait to visit GBNP again. Next time -- Wheeler Peak!
