Wheeler Peak Summit Trail
The trail to the summit of Wheeler Peak is one of the most pleasant and nicely laid out trails to a mountain top in a National Park. The trailhead is at 10,000 feet and you reach the the top 4 miles later and a little over 13,000 feet. The country is spectacular. Many are not used to the elevation so pace yourself accordingly but the summit is well worth the effort. One note of caution, this area is similar to the Rocky Mountains and does have regular afternoon summer thunderstorms. Summit early and avoid high points when the clouds build.

This trail is a fine high altitude hike after most of the snow has melted. For early season attempts, call the park HQ to find out the conditions. There are great views and small crowds on top.
