Hermit Trail is much less used than the Bright Angel or Kaibab trails and offers more solitude. Get an early breakfast and take the first shuttle out to Hermits Rest. The early morning light is spectacular as you drop into the canyon.
I did this trail in August of '95 and it was amazing. As ski said it was way less traveled, which is why we chose it. In fact in the week we were there we saw only 3 other people, a german couple and a search and rescue runner being paid to check the trail. At the bottom you can camp at Monument creek and hike through the monument creek narrows all the way to the Colorado river. It is some of the hottest and most forbidding landscape I have ever traveled on but well worth it.
