Mengal Pass, high point of Goler Wash - Death Valley National Park - Photo by Dughlas Stiubhart
Goler Wash is the hard, back way into Butte Valley and then Death Valley. Starting in the southern Panamint Valley south of Ballarat, the Goler 4x4 road heads east climbing eventually to Mengal Pass before descending into Butte Valley.
There are a number of old mines and cabins along the way, including the now burned Barker Ranch. It's hard to believe ol' Charlie Manson once drove a school bus up this canyon.
Check on conditions before starting up. Although Inyo County maintains the "road" in the wash, flash floods will sometimes take it out.
