Goler Canyon / Wash

Spot Comments:

  • Goler Wash is the hard, back way into Butte Valley and then Death Valley.  Starting in the southern Panamint Valley south of Ballarat, the Goler 4x4 road heads east climbing eventually to Mengal Pass before descending into Butte Valley.

There are a number of old mines and cabins along the way, including the now burned Barker Ranch.  It's hard to believe ol' Charlie Manson once drove a school bus up this canyon.

Check on conditions before starting up.  Although Inyo County maintains the "road" in the wash, flash floods will sometimes take it out.

  • Fun 4WD route leading to Butte Valley.  A few challenging spots, helps to have another vehicle to help spot.
