Butte Valley is one off those out-of-the-way places in Death Valley that the rangers don't tell you about. The easiest route in is up Warm Springs Canyon Road, off the south end of the West Side Rd. After the talc mine at Warm Springs a high clearance 4x4 is needed and the road may be washed out.
There are many old cabins and springs to explore in and around the valley. The Striped Butte and Manly Peak make good mountain hikes.
Note: Tourists unprepared for the desert environment have died back here. Check with the rangers about local conditions before attempting to enter this area. Bring plenty of water.
