Getting There

To access Mount Democrat Trail travel north from Fairplay to Alma. In downtown Alma turn left (west) on Park County Road 8. Travel approximately five miles following the signs to Kite Lake. A well defined trail heads north from Kite Lake up to a saddle in the ridge about a mile away.

The most popular route to the top of Mount Democrat, really a good looking mountain, is from Kite Lake. This trail and an early start offers the chance at summiting three of Colorado's fourteeners in a day, Mt. Democrat, Mt, Bross, and Mt. Lincoln. To do this you must also summit an unofficial fourteener, Mount Cameron at 14,286, so some people claim this a 4 fourteener day. Actually to get back to the trailhead you have to summit Cameron again, as we did, so some might claim this a 5 fourteener day. The vistas and area are absolutely glorious.
