Stew, I just-now noticed this comment...from 4 months ago. 
Yes, some years ago I drove to the gate at 12,000' and hiked up the road to the summit. It's just a hike along a dirt road...but at >14,000' I felt the altitude. Quite windy, too. It's gotta be the easiest 14er in California.
