Any comments on the Ford Eco boost extraordinary fuel MPG figures ?

Any other comments ?

We may be heading toward a new truck and are looking for:

-1/2 ton

-Extra cab with 8' bed

-Maybe FWD or maybe not

-Highway comfort and good MPG

My Ranger, and my SIL’s F150 have two modes...  ECO or Boost.

Keep your lead foot at home, and you get decent mileage.

I have a 2013 F150 FWD 3.5 ecoboost super cab with an 8 foot bed and a front dinette Grandby that’s got almost all the options. I have air bags, beefed up rear spring packs and e rated tires.

I guess I could say I get 21 mpg, which would be somewhat true. But you probably want the full story which would be that this was after a fill up at the summit of highway 58 in Tehachapi, California traveling to Bakersfield, a drop of around 4,000 feet. Plus a strong tail wind that day helped as well.

The real story is that over the last 20,000 miles I have an average of 12.9 MPG. But I drive a lot of freeways for a lot of miles just to get to the dirt roads I love and I can’t tolerate 18 wheelers and 5th wheels passing me when I go 65 MPH. So if your willing to slow up, you’ll do better. But that said, flat and straight country roads at 55 seldom gives me more than 14. And of course watch out for those headwinds!

One surprising thing is that even though this is a six banger, it is very fast on the highway and has plenty of power on or off road. I’ve never wanted for speed or power. It’s also very comfortable.

I've owned a 2017 F150 XLT Crew 3.5L EB 4x4 with the 5.5' bed for 4 years now.  I do not have a FWC mounted on this truck.  Around the hilly side of PDX for urban driving I see +/- 16 mpg.  Cruising the freeway or 2 lanes with the wife, dog and a bit of stuff I can see 21mpg if I am not heavy footed.  At times I also tow a 23' trailer with max weight of 5,200 lbs and get 11- 15 mpg depending on terrain and speed.  With the trailer loaded, some gear in the truck bed, dog, wife, extra water, wood, at times I've been close to max payload for the truck, which is 1,760#'s for my set up.  If I push it up to 70 mph my gas mileage is hovering in the 12mpg range.   I've been very happy with this truck.  Find it very comfortable to drive.  In fact, for knocking off miles on the highway and not getting fatigued, it's likely the best vehicle I've ever owned, including when towing.   Prior to the F150 I owned an older F250 for quite a few years that had a Grandby on the rear and I also towed with it.  While it was a good truck, from a driving standpoint, the newer F150 is a big improvement.

I have a 2016 F150 FX4, XLT, supercab, 6.5 ft bed, 2.7 eco boost twin turbos, with a 2019 FWC hawk permanently mounted.

Long trips on highways, usually driving 65 -70 mph, I get the following

Ave highway about 14 MPG

worst with head wind 11 MPG, couldn't keep the trans in 6th speed, kept dropping into 5th, even on flat terrain.

best with tailwind 19 mpg,

The truck has a lot of giddy up, especially considering it's always carrying the camper, no problem on mountain passes or tasing trucks on two lane highways in short passing zones. My only issue is that it has the smaller gas tank, so I only have about a 330 mile range on a full tank.

Thanks for all the comments...seems the neighbor who told me about his 24 MPG figures might have been enraptured...

He also said  Ford only offers 8' bed in F250 or larger and these would never have the 3.5 motor he is so fond of.

Just starting the research....I know I can ask Ford for fact....

True owners experience is helpful nonetheless.

For the last 3 years, my 2015 F150 f-door short bed (5.5') 2.7 liter 4WD has been my daily driver.  Never intended to put a camper or a bed cover on it and have not.  Never intended to tow with it but tried it once and loved the outcome.  Our camper is a 2,400 lb dry weight A-frame pop up so it doesn't catch the wind too badly.

As mentioned above, fuel mileage is pretty much what you want it to be depending entirely on how frisky you want to be with the skinny pedal.  Empty/lightly loaded, on fairly flat terrain, w/out the A/C running, no headwind, and held down to 55-60 mph I've seen as good as 23.5 mpg on a 475 mile round-trip from Raleigh, NC to Virginia Beach, VA, with around 45 miles of city driving while in VB.  By contrast, heavily loaded, towing my 6 X 12' utility trailer, and with vicious headwinds going and coming, and running 65-75 mph most of the way, my last trip to and from VB saw just 13.8 mpg.  I don't care to tow the camper much faster than 65-68 mph and most of our local/regional trips with it have been to the NC or TN Blue Ridge or Smoky Mountains, and we see 14.25 to 15.75 mpg on those runs.  While towing, she normally holds 6th gear on the upgrades if not too steep, but does prefer 5th on steeper or longer grades.  I normally shift to "M" and paddle-shift on hilly terrain because I don't  like the way the kickdown works while in "D".

All in all, the F150 has been one of the better trucks I've had over the last 48 years of driving only 4WD pickups, Scouts, Wagoneers, or Suburbans. Only time will tell how durable the little sewing machine motor will be,  but she'll turn 120,000 miles on a camper-towing trip to Hot Springs, NC on 5/21 so she's already getting a bit long in the tooth.  And, she runs like a scalded cat when the old hot-rodder in me wants her to.

I have a 2013 F150 3.7L non-eco boost, 4WD, 6.5 bed, Supercab.  When I bought it, it got in 20-22 mpg as I don’t drive fast.  However, as I changed out the road tires for AT tires, added a camper (ATC Ocelot), etc, the mileage dropped.  On a recent trip from Flagstaff to Johnson Canyon -Valley of the Gods area and back, I got in the low 14’s which is pretty normal for trips.  When I was buying in 2013, I concluded from my research that the eco-boost was more boost than eco and opted not to buy.  Just my opinion, others may differ.

I just looked, Ford offers the F150 8' bed in a regular cab or an extended cab, NA with crew cab.

IMHO for the money get a F350 and never worry about the payload.

I think most of the comments are pretty much spot on.  We have a 2015 F150 with extended cab and an 8' ATC on it.  3.5L Ecoboost.  Lollygagging along at 55 mph on two-lane roads, I can get 21 mpg.  On freeways I usually run about 67 mph and get around 16-17 mpg.  Anything faster and the mileage drops pretty quickly.  Plenty of power, really more than necessary.  I think the aluminum body made a big difference (cut about 900 lbs of body weight according to Ford).  Has been very comfortable driving for two of us.  And absolutely worth getting the bigger tank (36 gallons vs 23) as my range is always over 500 miles, usually 600+ before I get nervous.
