I'm fairly new to the West Coast. We're heading to north from Klamath Falls to Bend in mid-July and I'd like to take Highway 97 as opposed the Interstate 5. Does anyone have favorites for camping off Highway 97? No boon-docking this trip, so we're looking at campgrounds (my wife will be with me). We're driving a Four Wheel Camper. We actually live near Sacramento, but would like to make it to at least Klamath before stopping.

Definitely check out the campgrounds around Paulina Lake and East Lake in the Newberry Volcano site.

Fort Klamath has Kimbal Springs state park at the head of the Wood River.  It comes out of the earth fully formed.  Malone Springs has a small 2 site camp off the West Side road between Rocky Point and Fort Klamath.

Hint… do not forget bug dope!

In addition to Kimbal, a little farther north near Chiloquin is Collier State Park. It’s right off 97, and in my opinion a pretty good logging equipment museum. What I don’t know is if the campground is open again. It got sideswiped by a forest fire in 2020. If you’re up for something off the direct route, Crater Lake National Parks north entrance is IIRC, about a half hour west of 97. As for dry camp USFS campgrounds, 97 between K Falls and Bend cuts through the Winema and Deschutes National Forests for a lot of the route if you’re unaware. Like Collier, what may still be closed due to fire damage on the K Falls/Chiloquin end I do not know. Below are the links to their campground sites:

The Deschutes site will have the information for the afore mentioned  Paulina/East/Newberry area.

Good luck with your planning

Collier county park is a great place for a quick night or 2.

I haven't checked to see if they are open. There was some fire damage to the NF area there and

it has closed last year.

The spots are nice with hookups if needed or just "tent"sites that are very nice for out truck rigs.

There is a great logging museum there also.Fishing is available in the Williamson river with an Oregon license.

We have used it as a passing through night stop.Worked great.

One of our favorite Rest Areas is Grass Lake on 97 to the North of Mt. Shasta.

I found the Old State Highway off 97 from Northeast of Grass Lake to the community of MacDoel to be an unexpectedly scenic and nice drive. Can find it on google maps and the DeLorme atlas (where I found it), but I'm not sure of it's showing on many other paper maps.

If open, the logging museum at Collier is worth the stop if that sort of thing is of interest.

Lava River Cave and Lava Butte are both worth stopping. There's a fair amount of this sort of thing that is 'self-guided' out in the forest to the East of 97.

The High Desert Museum is well worth the stop and most seem to overlook it. Much more than just a museum!

In Bend, Pilot Butte for the view and Jake's for breakfast.

Another vote for Grass Lake rest stop, if they have the refurbishing completed.
