I'd say you're crazy if you don't look into a Chevy Colorado with the miniDurmax diesel. We downsized from a full-size 3/4 truck. Tested the Tacoma with a Fleet and knew immediately that the mini-diesel Chevy was the way to go. Just a much better platform for hauling a camper. Couldn't be happier than with our Colorado. Same great manuverable size as a Tacoma but stronger and much more efficient. 20 to 22mpg with a Flatbed Fleet loaded and pulls quiet and comfortably. We passed a Tacoma-Fleet the other day on a hill, we were going 70+ and he well...he wasn't.

All great points.. I wish I could get that mileage with a camper setup, but ultimately your Colorado can’t go down to Mexico and survive due to gas quality. Not sure if that matters much to you, but it does to me

Joemyself,

Quite a few of us do get the kind of mileage with Tacoma/Fleet combos mentioned by McCrash with his Colorado, but you have to drive conservatively and limit how much you modify your truck and how much gear you carry. Adding bigger tires, lifts, bumpers, and full-on recovery gear will significantly reduce your mpg, as will adding or carrying lots of amenities like awnings, walled bug screens, tables, grills, bike racks/bikes, etc. Couple that with a heavy foot and regularly driving faster than 60 mph and you won't like your visit to the gas station. I approach using my rig the same way I approach lightweight backpacking--only bringing what I absolutely need to do what I like to do. However, everyone's needs/wants are different. Take a look at this string for some real world mpg experience:

Good luck with your decision!

I downsized from a Ram 1500 ecodiesel + Hawk shell to a DCSB Tacoma/Swift full camper this year. Diesel tech was cool but with the initial premium in cost by the time it saved me money on fuel I would be paying for a maintenance thing. It would be different where they are ubiquitous in Europe, Africa, or Australia. Having more space for long trips was nice but this is my only vehicle and its suits my short commute and every day use better. You will pay out the nose to change from your loss of investment to your tacoma, taxes, all new mods, etc. What you have is a big cab and short wheelbase which has a great deal of value. I believe you fill up whatever space you have with junk and make due with smaller size whether it is big truck/grandby, campershell/air mattress, tourbus/RV, big house, Manhattan apartment, etc. The Swift is tight but as long as you stow **** as soon as you're done with it, it works fine.  The main advantage of the fleet IMO is the different floorplans but I like the Rollover.
