It's probably too late for anyone to do this for the 2011 event, but given the extremely unique opportunity to see some incredible and little-travelled country, and to help a great organization, I'll post this now to get people thinking about next year.

Owyhee River Float

Info at ONDA website

Owyhee Area at WTW

BACKGROUND
ONDA has worked to help protect the Owyhee river system for over a decade. Our efforts include two successful lawsuits: In 1998 ONDA won the Owyhee Wild and Scenic River Act lawsuit, removing cows from the river corridor. In 2007, ONDA's injunction successfully halted BLM's construction of broad-scale range projects in areas with wilderness values in the Louse Canyon area. In addition to successful litigation, ONDA staff and volunteers have inventoried over 2 million acres for wilderness values in the Owyhee watershed, contributing towards a future Wilderness bill. ONDA is also working on a National Conservation Area proposal for the Owyhee.

TRIP BACKGROUND
This is just hand's down, a spectacular trip on one of America's wildest rivers. This is a river which few have had the opportunity to experience, but no one will forget. Join ONDA and enjoy 5 days of rafting through inspiring rock formations, and canyons; engaging in service projects to help protect and restore the area, with enough time left over for side hikes to ancient petroglyphs and hot springs.

Experienced ONDA staff and volunteers will row our rafts, providing explanations of geology, natural history and the conservation plans (present and future) for the area.

We will also be involved in some restoration and monitoring projects within the river corridor. Depending on water levels there will be frequent opportunities for guided hikes and independent exploration as well as time to sit and just relax.

Additional details such as gear lists, will be provided after registration has been confirmed (this trip fills up fast...)

TIMELINE
Plan to arrive in or near Rome the night of May 3rd. We will meet to load boats and get on the river at the Rome landing on May 4th, at 8:00 AM (Pacific Time). May 4th-8th will be spent on the river, moving each day and working on projects and hiking etc. as time and weather allow. We will reach the take-out at Birch Creek mid morning on the 8th. It will take until late afternoon to unload gear, and shuttle folks back to Rome.

I was a professional raft guide for about a decade and was luck enough to guide a trip on the Owyhee in 1999. It is an incredible river and awe inspiring scenery. The hudus alone are worth the trip. It is also one of the worst river shuttles in the country to do and requires a boat tow across a reservoir at the bottom which makes it a challenging trip to do as a private. So to go on an organized trip where the logistics are all taken care of for you is a big bonus on this river. If you have the chance to go it is well worth it!

Onda is a favorite group of mine. My son and I did a couple of work trips with them. In the wonderful Hart Mountain NWR removing old fencing back when Michael was only 8 years old, then a couple of years later doing cow damage mapping and inventory along the Owyhee River. It's been 10 years since we've been there, I miss it.
