No charcoal chimney needed! Can't wait to try this. I've been using waxed milk/juice cartons for years as fire starter material: it's free and very effective. This takes it to the next level!

I recently made up another of the old-school grills I had years ago. I decided that while my Weber grill was getting a bit shabby for guests it was just fine for my use. So, after buying a new one for the house, I took my trusty angle grinder with a wire wheel on it to that old, crusty one and got a remarkable amount of crud off of it. Then with the cutting blade installed I trimmed off some of the round to it to make it smaller as I figured I needed enough for 2-4 people only and a 24" or whatever they are around grill would be hard to carry in the F-250/Alaskan setup. Now it is about 16" wide and full length. Plenty of room for chow and now it fits where I want to put it. I got in the habit once of using the wire wheel to really clean it up between trips, but right now my SOP is to take a wire brush to it as soon as the steaks, burgers or whatever is off the grill and the crud doesn't become semi permanent.

I carry it out/back in a couple doubled up grocery bags which, when then get home get recycled because they are kinda nasty after using as well.

Oh yeah, you will be cutting off the "handles" which means it is now FLAT and packs easier. I usually round up a few rocks to get it to the right height over the coals and do not use that nasty "grill" the fire rings usually come with!

Thanks for the recommendations, fellas! Will be taking note of these.

By the way, newbie here. I'm glad to have found this great online community. I'm hoping to learn more from the other members here. A photographer by profession, I usually travel around, camera in the trunk and my dog at the backseat, secured in his dog crate. I've been going around the various states looking to take the best scenic photographs ever. Cheers!

How about a Weber Go Anywhere Charcoal grill. You can pack it full of all your grilling essentials and close it up like a tool box. Check out this video:

Have to admit he has it down to a science. I love the one I got ..stainless and folds down flat but...it does not have a lid that would open up a lot more grilling options.

He sure does, but that is basically what I have used for years, but with less things stuffed in it, . It has  been kicked about, left out in the rain and snow, and it still works  !  I The only real thing wrong with it it is those dang legs get tangled up and without them you have to watch where you cook with it-like things with plastic tops-because the bottom gets real hot if you don't use them (right Bob)!  I keep thinking about getting something new but it keeps right on trucking along-so why should I?.
