Looking for recommendations for good mosquito repellent. We tried candles and they don't work.

I haven't tried Thermacells yet but I've seen them on different hunting shows:

Any other recommendations?

Thanks,

Jim

Therma cell works fantastic for the immediate area - not sure how it would do for an entire campsite.

We use lemon eucalyptus oil.  It's natural and it works.  Better for the kids than chemicals.

There will still be some mosquito bites no matter what you use.  Bring Preparation H to dab the bites to stop them from itching so you child doesn't scratch at them.

I've considered the Theracell units, too, but I don't know if the outgassing from it would have any effect on optical coatings.   I would need to do more research before I buy.

Sounds to me like a cool device, however, FAQs on the Thermacell site ( http://www.thermacel...mer-support/faq ) suggest that run problems may occur with their units above 4000 feet or so elevation; that might be a consideration for use if you tend to camp 'higher up'.

bought a thermacell appliance and patio lantern. Will report back on effectiveness in a couple of weeks.

We have bought and used clothing that's impregnated with a product called Permathrin (sp?) when we did a week long kayak trip down the Allagash River in Maine.
The area is known for black flies and my wife was really worried about it but the clothing works! We later found out that U.S. military uniforms have been treated with this. We also found that you can buy it as a spray and pretreat your own clothing at home before you leave on your trip.

Good luck!

PS. Lookie here!

Can also buy Avon Skin so soft with that P stuff (I kid my wife and call it "Premarin"). She will be bitten when no one else is, and it works for her remarkably well.
