He spent almost two decades recording over 80 tribes of North American Indians and is known for many famous portraits including Geronimo, and Princess Angeline (1896).

 

He was funded by J.P. Morgan and had anthropologist with him.  He took 40,000 photographs of over 80 tribes.  Curtis also shot videos and made thousands of audio recordings of language and music.

I believe that there is a Curtis exhibition, along with contemporary Native American photographers at the Portland Art Museum now.  If anyone around here is going, check first.   My memory may be faulty.
