Bill, thanks! I may use my backup D800 instead of thr primary camera. I think it will be fine, but...

I created a solar lens by cutting up one pair of ISO eclipse glasses (minimum order was 5; sorry if some of you have zero pairs). I found a plastic can/tub that fits snugly over my long lens (300mm + 1.4x), cut a hole the size of the glasses' "lens", and mounted the film to the can with black gaffer tape.

I have a 90º viewer that replaces the eye piece on my DSLR (I got it when I was doing lots of macro photos.) So there is little risk of looking at the raw sun while framing the shot. Learned to use the sun's shadow on the camera body to roughly align the shot.

I've been practicing this morning. f/8.0 at 1/60 sec seems to work pretty well, with the lens on manual focus and with gaffer tape holding the focus.

At totality, I can pop the can off easily, as you don't need a special lens or glasses while the sun is completely covered by the moon. I will likely use exposure bracketing during totality

I'm also going to try to take video with another camera with a 200mm lens... and a landscape time-lapse using my phone.

Yes, I'm taking 4 cameras and three tripods after telling myself I was just going to enjoy the show and leaving the photography to the professionals. Note to self: remember to enjoy the show.

Of course. They are part of the good company but I should have been more detailed. Don't want them to feel left out!

Going the other way regarding camera(s).  taking them along but not going to even setup for the eclipse, didn't buy any filters.  Going to sit back and enjoy the show and then look at everyone else's pictures afterwards.

Things have been interesting so far in central Oregon.  This morning there was a 15 mile standstill bumper to bumper line of traffic on highway 26 from Prineville heading east, and that was just to get to the turnoff to the event all these folks (now estimated at ~50k) are headed to another 15 or so miles up the USFS road.  One the other end of the region the Milli fire took off yesterday from 260 acres and is now over 3500, threatening evacuations west of Sisters.  Hope you all make it where you are headed with less drama.

I'm planning on heading east into the John Day County on Tuesday. I hope everyone else is going the other direction! :P

I've got 25 gallons of extra fuel on board and lot of food and water just in case.

Guy on an Early Bronco list is in Bend too. Posted this pic (no idea of source) to that list. Big Summit Prairie. I'm glad my grandfather didn't live to see this, he would be very upset.

I'm in Prineville now up at the in-laws. They actually closed 26E for awhile today and tried redirecting, but there's not much you can redirect to. I walked from the east end of town out to the BLM office to buy my senior pass (thanks to all for the heads up about the price increase) and was impressed with the attitudes of everybody who were standing around waiting for the "convoy" to finally move...and it eventually did. Please be very careful with fire this weekend. That is probably the single biggest concern from the locals. Have fun and be safe.
