Hi Boonie, The repair to the cracks over the door seems to have held up well.  The fix is a combination of the heavy aluminum strap glued & screwed above the door, and the 1/4" plywood screwed from the top down the sides of the door to keep the entire end square.

If anyone else does this and decides to glue the reinforcing aluminum strap like I did, I'd recommend drilling pilot holes ahead of time in the strap (it's 1/8" thick and I had a little trouble with it breaking screws off), applying glue, holding it in place with a couple clamps, and then screwing the length to keep it tight while the glue sets.  Then you can back out a few screws to put on the panels by the door if needed.
