This is the second one I know of.  The other was a butane canister that was being disconnected, the valve stuck open and the room went up.  Severe burns were the result.  A friend was his physician.

Good reason to not even think about refilling those cylinders. We don't if thats the case here but its a popular thing to do. Just say no.

I have never even thought to have the #1 canisters refiled.

That's scary.

I have 4 of those canisters. They came with caps which I replace after use and I would not refill those. I was planning on storing a couple with my big tank on the camper. Bungee them up so they did not roll around. Propane has a lot of energy in it. I always turn mine off when not in use. Glad no one was killed....

Some 10 years ago, I was having lunch in the company cafeteria. The cook was using one of the butane hotplates. Something obviously went wrong as there was suddenly a bright fireball and the cook exited the area running at top speed with second degree burns and a trip to the hospital.  They switched to induction cooktops the nest day.

Each time I consider buying one of those cooktops, i recall that incident and forget about it.

While these incidents are scary when you look at the amount of propane grills in America and the thousands that are in RV's vs the accidents the percentage seems to be quite small. Being aware and safe is a good idea with any flammable liquid! I'm not ready to give up grilling just yet.... :)

Incidence of RV fires in comparison to the total number of RVs in use is incredibly small and in this case, as with others, the details of what actually happened with the cylinder are lacking. It is unfortunate folks were injured, but it is easy to lose sight of the fact there is some level of risk involved in everything we do.
