Is going one direction more preferable than the other?

Just me but I would go toward 395 for two reasons...one you are coming down from Sacto on that side of the Sierras and two, I would rather end on 395 and east side rather than in San Joaquin valley...Sequoia end of the range is beautiful!

This assume the Sherman Pass you are referring to is the one in Ca.

Yeah, and since I'm planning on seeing Hetch Hetchy I'll be part of the way down there already.

Craig - I agree with Wallowa; you could turn that into a sort of modified loop trip.  We live about 50 miles from the western end of Sherman Pass and two weeks ago, accompanied by Tuff Guy 62 and Tuff Chick from WTW, we went west to east over SP, then worked our way up 395 to the White Mountains and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest,.  To get home, we retraced our steps and did SP east to west, however the Tuffs, who live in the Monterey area, continued north on 395 and over Tioga Pass to get home . . . a nice loop for them.  Either way, you are going to have a great trip.  Enjoy!

Dropping down out of Kennedy is a serious drop going that way, and I'd still go in that direction too. The grade is steep enough that I was wishing for an exhaust brake and it precipitated my finding a used one......

Craig

Are you referring to to the paved Sherman Pass road or the 4x4 trail? I don't think the paved road is much different either way and would mostly depend on your itinerary. Low range would not be needed.

If you're referring to the 4x4 trail the western end has a steep switchback climb that I wouldn't attempt in my truck. It's a fun trip in the Jeep though.

I was referring to the paved road, and no, not low range steep, but it is pretty steep. I think that I pulled the trans down into second gear to help with speed control.
