Forest Service Extends Closure Orders and Fire Restrictions in California

VALLEJO, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announces that current closure orders and fire prohibitions in California have been extended. This decision will be evaluated daily, taking fire and weather conditions into account. The fire prohibition includes building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove.

Nine National Forests (NF) in California remain closed: Angeles NF, Cleveland NF, Los Padres NF, Inyo NF, Klamath NF, San Bernardino NF, Sequoia NF, Sierra NF, and Six Rivers NF. This decision will continue to be reviewed daily.

Nine other National Forests may be open to varying degrees. Visitors should contact the following National Forests for more information on their status: Eldorado NF, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Lassen NF, Mendocino NF, Modoc NF, Plumas NF, Shasta-Trinity NF, Stanislaus NF, and the Tahoe NF. For additional questions, please contact your local National Forest.

"Continued closures are based on extreme fire conditions, critical limitations of firefighting resources, and to provide for firefighter and public safety,” said Randy Moore, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region. "We understand how important access to the National Forests is to our visitors. Our aim is to prevent any new fires on the landscape."

If you do intend to visit a National Forest that is open to visitors, we continue to recommend that you not travel long distances to recreate. If you or anyone in your household is feeling sick, please remain at home and plan your trip for another time. All visitors should practice self-sufficiency during your visits to national forests. Recreating responsibly will help ensure that expanded access to recreational facilities, services, and opportunities continues. Responsible recreation practices should be maintained at all times, including:

  • Maintaining at least six feet distancing from others
  • Do not gather in groups and please follow the latest guidance from officials
  • Communicate with others as you pass. Alert trail users of your presence and step aside to let others pass
  • Pack out your trash and leave with everything you bring in and use.
  • All services may not be available, so please plan accordingly.

The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in the Pacific Southwest Region, which encompasses over 20 million acres across California, and assists State and Private forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. National forests supply 50 percent of the water in California and form the watershed of most major aqueducts and more than 2,400 reservoirs throughout the state. For more information, visit www.fs.usda.gov/R5.

I was disappointed to see that hikers were still accessing Forest Service land in the San Bernardino Forest over last weekend. Clearly posted but the gate was wide open...we’re going to have to do a better job of education if the trend to “get out there” continues during this Age of COVID.

Heenan Reservoir on Monitor Pass is a catch & release Cutthroat fishery that is only open Friday - Sunday (weekends) in September and October. This year it is closed due to the nearby Slink Fire and extreme fire conditions. We drove by last Sunday morning. The gate was closed but there were 5 vehicles parked with anglers with rods going around disregarding the closure..........................

..........................it leaves me speechless.

Where is fish and game. They usually have people working the hatchery?

I wouldn't want to get caught fishing there when closed.I bet the fine is huge.

Or should be. What don't people get?  Gate closed signage up seems very easy to obey.

Maybe they came from down south and figured we drove all this way we have the right to fish.

Must say somewhere in the constitution that "I can do what I want anytime I want".

Since the mid 80's I have fished there and obeyed ALL rules. It's been a great place to fish.

This year maybe the fish get a rest, that's OK with me.

Although we have a winter storm approaching, our local National Forest just sent out an announcement that fire and dispersed camping restrictions are still in effect. Don't expect the restrictions to change until we get some real moisture. As a local resident, I appreciate the responsible caution.

Fire and camping restrictions still in effect with record dry fuels

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - Although the Eldorado National Forest is set to receive moisture this weekend, fire and camping restrictions are still in effect to prevent an unwanted wildfire.

"We've been setting records for dry fuel conditions for more than 2 months," said Forest Supervisor Jeff Marsolais. "Each day, we measure the dryness of the fuels which gives us an indication of how ready they are to burn. This measurement is compared against the same day for all previous years. Even last week, we hit 100% on 3 days which set a new all time record. As soon as we have enough moisture to make a difference in the fire potential, I will lift the restrictions."

If you are planning to visit the Eldorado National Forest this weekend, here are some important things you should know:

Emergency Fire Prohibition - Regional Order 20-24 is in effect until midnight, and will be replaced by Forest Order 03-20-16 which prohibits smoking and all fires except using a gas stove at least 3 feet away from any flammable material.

Emergency Camping Prohibition - Forest Order 03-20-15 is in effect and prohibits camping forestwide except for in developed campgrounds. No overnight camping is allowed in dispersed areas, including Desolation and Mokelumne Wilderness areas. This order will be assessed after we receive precipitation this weekend.

Camping is only allowed in open developed campgrounds. Most campgrounds have closed for the season, but reservations can still be made at www.recreation.gov. As of November 6, 2020, six developed campgrounds are still open:

Day Use Updates

  • Icehouse Day Use Area will remain open with fees waived at this site.
  • Lovers Leap, Pyramid Creek Trailhead, and Caples Boat Ramp are closed.
  • Caples Lake Dam/Trailhead will remain open, but restrooms will be closed.
  • This will the be the last weekend for Woods Lake Trailhead and Day Use Area.
  • Stumpy Meadows Reservoir remains open with fees waived at this site. The water level is low for using the boat ramp, but kayaks and canoes will have easy access.

Fork Fire Closure – Crystal Basin Area

Interior burning continues on the Fork Fire which is 1,673 acres and 85% contained. Forest Order 03-20-19 prohibits entering the closure area around the Fork Fire due to ongoing fire activity and fire suppression operations. More information is available on Inciweb at: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7165/ .

Point Fire - Nevada Point Ridge Area

The Point Fire is 93 acres, and 97% contained. This fire is located 4 1/2 miles west of the Fork Fire on the opposite side of the Rubicon Canyon. Both the Point Fire and the Fork Fire are burning in the footprint of the 2014 King Fire. More information is available on Inciweb at: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7254/ .

ALERT: Visitors are asked to please avoid the 14N10 road on Nevada Point Ridge due to heavy equipment using that road for fire suppression repair and rehabilitation.

Hunting is allowed with the applicable license and tags in accordance with California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife regulations. Visitors can expect to see hunters hiking with rifles.
