Ran across this article in Truck Camper Adventure online magazine and thought I’d share.

One piece of information in the article is a link to a list of off-road recovery groups in the Western US that you may want to save in case something like this happens to you...

That was quite a story.  Lots of things for us to consider.

From what I know of that trail I wouldn't do with my truck. Even with the Jeep I wouldn't do it solo. Glad they weren't seriously injured. Stuff can be replaced. I hope I never have to deal with my insurance people like that. Not fun!

After reading the rest of the story I have a few more comments. I printed that list of Facebook groups. Good info there.

I was thinking they could have also used a 2 meter ham radio and contacted the BARC for assistance. Maybe gotten a local Jeep club to help a little faster than the BLM. Then I thought about what I just did this last trip. I left my hand held radio at home. I have radios in the truck and Jeep why do I need the portable. Now I know why I should have brought it.

Cell phones are no replacement for a real flashlight. I think I had five along but I'm a bit of a flashlight geek :)

I had my inreach along but I need to keep it on person. Not much good if you can't reach it.

I tipped over my Jeep in February outside of Las Vegas. I had a Garmin Inreach mounted on the dash, but I was able to walk up a hill to get cell service. The local Jeep recovery folks were hard to reach and never got back to me (it was a Sunday). I spent several hours trying to get a tow company to come help me, and one eventually did.

With the stress level and back and forth activity involved, imagine a three hour constant workout according to my fitness watch, the Inreach would have been easiest. However, I would have been at the mercy of their crisis center. I could barely use the high level functions of cell phone, and occasionally handed it to my teenage son to do more complex tasks, like send GPS coordinates. My ham radio would have been out of the question, unless I had my frequencies set up in advance. A break down, where you could just camp? Sure.

There's a thread here about that when it first happened. From what I know of that route (calling it a 'road' is being very generous) I'm not interested in driving it at all. Maybe back in the days of my 'glass dune buggy, but not with anything in current inventory. Local knowledge is a precious thing.

Where does that road go?
