While waiting out the pandemic, I am giving a lot of thought to exploring more of Oregon.  The Oregon Historical Society now publishes “Oregon Geographical Names” (Lewis and Lois McArthur, Binford 1928).  It seems like a good resource for searching out interesting places to find.

I am curious if other western states have a similar reference book.

Yes, Steve, there are. I have similar books for California and Nevada... and maybe Utah. Unfortunately, I don't have them with me right now, so I can't give a helpful reference.

Of course, Amazon keeps a record of my life in its files:

I second the Nevada Place Names book. I got a used hard-bound copy thru amazon -- it is fun to read and packed with all sorts of illuminating short stories about the land, history, native americans, and the hopes and dreams of past folks.

I have had a copy of Utah Ghost Towns for many years. I see it is still available, new and enlarged: https://www.amazon.c...08567213&sr=8-1

And a must have is: Idaho for the Curious, by Cort Conley: https://www.amazon.c...,aps,265&sr=8-1

Steve, thanks for the tip on Oregon, I just ordered a used hardback version.
