The range advantage is definitely the most intriguing part of a diesel to me

Check your shock absorbers... they could be shot.

Just before adding a new 2020 Hawk to our 2005 Dodge 4x4, I upgraded to Fox 2.0 shocks.  When I removed the original OEM shocks all four were completely useless (easily compress and extend by hand).  The change to new shocks was quite noticeable.  I'm also running airbags (plumbed separately).

My son has a half-ton rated Tundra with a Hawk, no sway plenty of power.

Regarding diesel, been there done that. Loved the turbo diesel with a large Hallmark with bathroom etc, going up the Colorado passes.

Problem: wife hated the noise and smell; cold weather starting; oil changes are expensive with that large oil reservoir and need to be changed more frequently that gaser; in Colorado diesels have to have emissions tests every year. Altogether I found diesel far more expensive to operate per mile that gaser.

My 2012 Ford diesel doesn't have any smell and not much noise either.  A world of difference form 5 years before.

I don't like dripping fuel on my hands or clothes but the other annoyances have gone away.

Thought I would update this thread because I'm sure everyone was dying to know what I decided to go with. I took everyone's advice, ignored it, and went diesel (duramax LLY). I have not been disappointed with the purchase so far, gas mileage is where I'd like it and upping to the 3/4 ton has been night/day upgrade. The extra power is pretty sweet too. I guess we'll see it if becomes a money pit in the next few years, I just needed to find out for myself.

Used to be that when buying a used truck that I felt that diesel was the best option for mpg and by extension, range. The newer gas trucks are getting older diesel mpg's unloaded, don't know how much they suffer when loaded. My RoT has had to become more flexible than it used to be.

I went with the 60 gal tank option. It is really nice to be able to buy fuel where we want to rather then when we have to, but there is a serious downside to such a fuel tank. It is easy to forget to check the gauge and then you get to fill a 60 gallon tank when you have to and not where you want to! With a smaller tank it is a good regulator for stops. With the bigger tank my bladder has become the regulator when traveling in new country and when traveling in familiar country I have a few "do not pass, stop here" spots. With all of that said, I would not go back to the OEM tank without a very good, multifaceted set of reasons.
