I learned about these a few years ago when I saw a restored one along I-40, west of Albuquerque, what a neat and wild way to navigate by air. Thanks for the writeup and sharing!

Beaver Marsh Beacon2

Oh Ski what did you start.  :)  it was bad enough that we used to seek out tiny airports, now we look for tiny airports with beacons!
While driving back up from Klamath Falls on 97 a few miles short of Chemult is a dirt airstrip with a beacon. Looked it up later and seems to be one of the Airway beacons with the gen shed still there. The airport shows up (2S2) on nav maps as Beaver Marsh State airport (now privately owned).  Could this be part of a route along US 97.

I was contacted through our blog by a gentleman interested in the acetylene powered lamps in the airway beacons. Through my contacts I was able to provide him information. Mainly, though, he was impressed with Julie's and my tenacity with this quest of ours. He most kindly offered to send us something very special in the mail.

 

It arrived this week. It is an envelope carried on the 50th anniversary flight in May 1968 along the U.S. Air Mail route. Not only that, it was carried in an original U.S. Air Mail airplane. How cool is this! Inside the envelope was a card about the recovery and restoration of the plane, Old Number 249.

And this makes us wonder, was there a 100th year anniversary commemorative flight in May of 2018?

Trying to figure out where these mostly small installations are is an enjoyable map study project. Much like what we had to do in mineral exploration field work: Job #1 is locate and sample old production.

To add a bit of historical background, my wife's maternal grandfather was a flyer so much from the old school that his initial flight training was in balloons during WWI. He shifted to fixed wing piloting and flew the mail across the West for some years in the 1920s. He had a number of forced landings and was reported missing for several days on 3 different occasions. In 1928 he was hired to fly Ford Trimotors for the predecessor to TWA, an erstwhile operator named Transcontinental Air Transport. Starting in 1929, TAT had an odd New York to Los Angeles passenger flight plan: a 48 hour trip with flights by day connecting to trains by night. TAT was derisively called "Take A Train". A merger formed what was later renamed TWA in 1930 and all-flight transcontinental scheduled passenger service began in that year. Captain Earl Fleet flew for TAT and TWA until the late 1950s, the last few years assigned to the over-the-pole San Francisco to London route in 4-engine Constellations, one of which he emergency-landed (engine afire) at a former bomber base in Cut Bank, Montana very late in his career. Captain Fleet was one of those guys who combined flair and fearlessness with daring which he exhibited by always driving Cadillacs and driving 100 mph pretty much everywhere he went, even in retirement.

Wow! What an amazing story. Air travel sure has changed. What it must of been like at night flying beacon to beacon. Wonder how much wind affected the pilots ability to stay on the path.

Foy adds the cherry on top. It is always great when Foy adds to the posts.
