5 gal. bucket and a toilet bowl plunger with a few holes drilled to allow soapy water to rush thru.
Interesting. At times (when I can get water from a lake, stream, or even a clean cow trough) I've washed clothes in a 5-gal bucket with lid, shaking it around by hand then wringing the clothes. HARD work. Other times I've just swished/rubbed clothes around, without soap, in said water source. Works so-so. Saves an annoying visit to Mr. Lon D. Mat.

Takes up very little space, you need some excess water and a safe place to get rid of soapy water.

On our longer trips we have used an eight gallon olive container with tight fitting lid strapped to the rear bumper.
200 miles wash, 300 miles rinse cycle....followed by solar drying device.
