Over the years we have been to a lot of train museums.

Some of our favorites are Cumbres & Toltec in Chama

in New Mexico. Durango & Silverton in Durango Colorado.

Sierra Railway in Jamestown Ca. The now gone Westside

& Cherry Valley east of Sonora Ca.

The trolley museum in Rio Vista Ca..

There are a lot of rail museums across the country.

All deserve a check out.

Thanks for the info on the Northern Nevada Museum.

Driven past but never stopped.

Speaking of trains, the Golden Spike National Historic site in Utah is really cool. I really like the nearby area where there are two side-by-side railroad beds where the two lines raced past each other, trying to get the most miles. It's not a "small town" museum though, there's hardly anything else there.

Overton NV has a cool small museum worth a stop and see if your close by. Also dispersed camping with a vista of Lake Mead are close by. Sugars bar and restaurant is there if your hungry.

Frank,

I have operated my narrow gauge railroad motorcar (speeder) on both the Durango and Silverton and Cumbres and Toltec railroads multiple times.  I agree that they are wonderful living museums.

I just remembered the Calvert Marine Musum in Solomons, MD.  It is a fantastic small marine museum.  I have been several times and always enjoyed going there during my buiness trips to the Goddard Sapce Flight Center our vacation trips to the Washington D.C. area.

Frank,

That would be a great ride.We really enjoyed our trips there.

Even if we don't ride the "rails" just walking around observing the equipment is fun.

I really enjoy watching those standard gauge locos converted to narrow gauge

moving along the rails.

Thanks for the info.

Carter County Museum in Ekalaka, Montana.  First visited in 1975 as a 19 year-old geology student working on a nearby dinosaur fossil excavation. Ekalaka isn't at the end of the world, but if you climb a fencepost, you can see it from there.

Hardly a small town, but Newport News, VA is home to the Mariner's Museum.  The recovered portions of USS Monitor are being preserved there, and there's a full scale mock up just outside of the facility.

Another great one, again very much not a small town museum, is the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.  It's so large, they built an underground addition to house U-505, a German sub captured late in WWII.  The whole U-505 exhibit is extraordinary.
