That's cool, Jonathan.

I understand there was an upside to the flimsy distribution system:  The wooden crates made good firewood in the desert, and the empty single-use cans could be readily shaped into other useful items----such as the funnel the pictured tanker is pouring fuel from the flimsy into!

Yes indeed! The troops cut off the tops of them, filled them with sand and gasoline, and used them as stoves, known as Benghazi Burners. Probably a hundred other uses—everything except safely carrying fuel . . .

My father, a WWII vet, had several flimsies that he used to store mineral spirits, etc. I remember as a boy that the thin wire handle on top really cut into your hands when lifting it.

I've been preaching the gospel of NATO cans (and using them) for decades.  Some of my cans are around 70 years old.  Obviously built to last.  I don't buy the argument for the new Scepter cans being better.

As for the Chinese fakes, a couple of years ago this guy did a great video comparing a Wavian to a fake.
