Any ideas on where to observe over wintering Monarchs ?

David there are  Eucalyptus groves in the Santa Barbara area north of the college

along the coast.They usually attract a larg amount of them this time of year.

Santa Cruz has some groves at Natural Bridges SP.

Pacific Grove also has an area that is protected that the Monarchs come to.

 

I think you need to search those areas to make sure they are there.

Less are showing up each year so a chech would help to decide.

So it is the blue gum eucylytus grove that they favor ?

 

We read that the numbers are up over last year....a great sign.

 

Do you have any idea when the begin to disperse ? when would be too late to see them?

Yes David the Blue Gum is the tree they favor.

 

I think you should search Pacific Grove city for some info.

Yes their numbers are up,don't know when they leave.

When are you looking to start your trip?

David you might search the Cambria/San Simeon area.

There are groves of Uks there and a nice campground at

the San Simeon SP. Also the Elephant Seals are in that area.

I worked in a building across the street from the Ellwood Monarch Grove for many years and have walked over there many times.  It is worth a visit.  Sadly there have been significant declines in the returning Monarch population the past few years.  I believe there has been an uptick in the count this year see the links below.

There are also Monarch Butterfly groves in Pismo Beach and Pacific Grove near Monterey.

There is camping North (actually West) of Goleta at El Capitan, Refugio and Gaviota State beaches which are an easy drive from Goleta.   Additional camping can be found in Los Padres National forest (pretty dry right now and further away) as well as at some private campgrounds (e.g Flying Flags in Buellton).

Camping is available in RV parks around Pismo and in Avila beach.  Further North, camping is available in Montana De Oro (a nice place to visit on its own) and even further North up the coast.   

San Simeon is long way from Pismo and Pacific Grove but the Elephant seals are worth seeing (nearby Hearst Castle is still closed as far as I am aware.
