Oh, I’d love to go with half inch!  If it’s working for you, I’ll start tracking some down.

Yes, if using 1/2” ply, Baltic birch is the way to go. I’ve also used other 1/2” plywood, such as Luan, for other applications. It is tempting, because it is less expensive, but it is rather bendy and not nearly as strong as Baltic birch.

For the Baltic birch, look for a commercial sheet goods supplier in your area. This would be the place the local cabinet shops buy their materials. Likely no show room, and possibly a required minimum order. Get sheet or two extra…you never know. You have to call them up and order and put it on will-call. Hopefully the current supply chain issues won’t make it unavailable.

Beautiful work, well explained. Thank you. Are you happy with the 3/4 birch plywood bench tops? I am redesigning my dinette and need to make hinged bench top/bin lids that will be atop a hole that is roughly 22x30 with support on all sides. Will it need bracing or can it do okay on its own? Also, did you use straight birch plywood or get the revered Baltic Birch plywood?

Very happy with the bench tops. I believe you’ll be fine with side bracing alone. My table top rests on bench edges with an inch overlap on each side. No flexing when I’m laying over it. I weigh about 200.

I went with 3/4 Baltic birch because that’s what my hardware store had. Good luck! Let us know how it works out

Do you happen to be in Utah?
