I did think the highest drivable road was 12k

Well road or not it wasn’t in the lower 48.

It was beautiful, but actually pretty miserable. We'd been at altitude (over 10k) for quite a while by then, but still not comfortable at all.

I live at 10,082 feet above Fairplay, Colorado.

I do all my camping above 7000 feet and many times above 8600 feet. Propane heating has never been an issue. The bearing on the blower drum squeals a bit when it gets hot, but other than that, for 20 years it has been running like a champ.
