Howdy

I have just been studying the BC Parks and Trails Site for a visit to Vancouver Island this summer:

http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca

Noticed that many of the down island sites are marked closed.

Any idea why ? Are they marked closed for current logging activity ?

Looking for a quick overnight stay about 150 miles north of Victoria as we head up island.

David check out the campground at Cambell River.

It has about 12 nice sites right on the river and others in the trees.

Don't why some parks are closed Covid maybe?

Elk Falls Provincial Park is just outside of Campbell River (300kms or so from Victoria) and is quite nice. It should be open.

There are also lots of recreation sites north of Campbell River that you could look into that should also be open (most of them aren’t really closed even off season)

Happy to share a few special ones out that way and further north if you’d like - send me a PM.

Spent last winter on the island, mostly in the north, since Covid prevented the southern US and Baja.

Thanks for the reply

We have been up island before and going again....

Just wanted to find a first night stay over location....tired of Coldstream but also want to get further north  on our first day off the ferry..

So do you know why so many are marked closed ? I do not but wondered about wildfire precautions or Covid issues.

Don’t know as I’m not in Bc right now but I do know it’s been really, really wet (even by PNW standards) this spring.

They weren’t closed last winter (full Covid) so I doubt it’s Covid related.

When I looked up Elk Island it showed open. Closer to Victoria is Rathtrevor PP in Parksville which is a much larger PP which is also showing open right now.

David the campground name at Cambell River is Quinsam River CG.

It flows into the Cambell just out side of town.

Search it and call them. Nice fishing stream.

I agree with Frank, Miracle Beach is nice, however the last time we stopped there it was crowded with large RVs and we decided not to stay there.

As far as I know there was a lot of snow this winter and a lot of floods in southern Vancouver Island. Therefore lots of the trails and sites are not repaired until today. But you can look up the opening dates here:
