Not sure which thread this should be in or if a new “Mapping” thread should be started with all the cool stuff out there and paper as well.
One way I do like to get a big picture is by exploring places and if. I find one that I’d like to revisit I like to “star” it in Google maps. I can move these. To Gaia or the other way around. Having a bunch of starred places one can then make routes in a way that makes sense.
That being said I use a number of map platforms so I can be of line and use a gps . I do most planning with atlases (paper) but mark it on Google.

So here is my conundrum… I pride myself at being dogged in solving something that just isn’t working but I can’t even find help online for what I see as a simple question.

I have 85 starred waypoints on Google map (in My Places). Clear as a bell on my laptop OS. I open the same map in IOS (iPad or iPhone) and the starred waypoints are not there (unless they were made on IOS). I am signed into my Google account but the starred waypoints are not syncing between the two platforms. They should.

I use an iPad as an offline map with a separate gps (through Bluetooth). It helps the copilot (me Mrs.) see where we are and look ahead to some of the starred stuff on the route that might be a second or third choice looking for a spot to sleep or looking for alternatives….. or as she like to call them options.

So if anyone has had this issue or might steer me to where to look it would be much obliged. I have done a bunch of wordings in Google search as well as Apple forums. Seems searching engines are trying to steer one elsewhere rather than simple verbatim searching. I get really angry at the suggestions or wags as to what I want…. Just answer the question!!!! I scream at the screen!

Rob,

I cannot answer your question.

I can share that I am the obsessive compulsive preplanner, going so far as making lists and saving lots of spots into our Garmin Drivesmart 65 before the trip begins. I have now learned the 'options person', my wife, generates those options as we are driving, by studying maps, atlases, consulting Google and studying our digital maps on Avenza. Her 'options' are often much better or more sensible than my pre-planned spots. I have learned this method ends up with about half our destinations coming from our 'options' person, about a third are my preplanned spots and the rest just come along through serendipity,

Good luck with your search for your mapping question. I am not sure if you find the answer it will be very compelling to the 'options' person. It would not be in my case.

For all (any?) who also use this feature, a friend did send this to me this morning ... seems there are a few 'issues' with syncing and it isn't something I have done wrong (probably) but must be a ghost in the machine.

Rob I don’t have an answer for you but wondering if using a different mapping app like maps.me would work for you. I was introduced to this free app by a German couple I met this summer in Canada and he swore by it. He has used it literally all over the world.

Thanks for that. I agree whole heartedly. I found Maps.me six years ago and love it. It is great as once one has the downloaded map everything is available if you have a link to a gps (which I do carry in my glove box). The thing is, my copilot is more familiar with G Map. I am glad you reminded me and I will see if I can export my starred places on Gmap (laptop) into Maps.me. It may sound overkill but it is a side affect of having been a Tech Coordinator for a couple years. Hard to shake the machine!

Have you tried this? It works on my iPad but haven’t tried on a phone.

“Hamburger” icon
Your Places
Maps
Select your map — just worked for me.

But I’ve switched to CalTopo for this sort of thing. I export from Google maps and import to CalTopo.

For those who are interested in the transferring of data... I feel in to this and it worked. Google does not like to help you do stuff it seems ... but if you want to move places you have marked (starred) in Google maps to another platform, I was able to export the data in .json format and Gaia imported it just fine.
