So close, yet feels so far away. Great Christmas present trip and just what the doctor ordered.

Even found a beautiful fish hatchery that was reminiscent of somewhere in Europe. It was closed but the gate was open as a fellow was doing some grounds maintenance. He just waved and said hello as we made lunch and sat by the pond. No one else there except the ducks. They had some stiff competition! As we fed them the giant trout made sure they got their share as well. Plenty of streams along the way for some fly fishing. Made it up to the loop around Crowley lake, but she was frozen solid.

I need to visit that fish hatchery.
When I visit the website for Mt Whitney Fish Hatchery, they list the open dates from April 1st through mid December (weather pending). It also says that they no longer hatch fish there, but use the space as an education center for the local fishery. That said last Saturday we were able to enjoy our lunch at a picnic table next to the pond (even though they were "closed"). Pond was loaded with LARGE trout (no fishing allowed of course). They have a fish pellet dispenser that gives you a handful for a quarter. beautiful building and location!

We stopped at Red Rock for a hike on the way up. On the way home we pulled in for a sunset hike and spent the night. Great campground. Well maintained and beautiful scenery! The next day we only had a 4.5 hour drive home from there. We will be heading back through there for sure. Weather cooperating, this may be our go to holiday get away.
